Blood vessels are very rich around the nose. Nasal bleedings can vary from a scanty bleeding to huge amounts need to be treated urgently. Therefore every nasal bleeding should be evalutaed carefully.
There are many reasons for nasal bleeding. Mostly small vessels just at the entrance of the nose bleed because of local traumas. Trauma, dry and warm air, hypertension are the main reasons. 90% of all nasal bleedings are due to them. In that kind of bleedings you should clean the nose with cold water, throw away the blood clot inside the nose, and squeeze the nasal alae firmly 4-5 minutes. Do not let the patient lie down, event if lie down erase the head above the heart level. This treatment mostly stops these kind of bleedings. Bleedings can recur until the vessels heal. If they continue much longer or if they do not stop then admit to an ear, nose, throat physician.
Other vessels can also bleed and cause serious problems that need more treatment. Both the hypertension if present and bleeding should be controlled.
Bleeding can be caused by sinusitis, nasal infections and nasal tumors; even can be the first symptom sometimes.
People having blood coagulation problems or people taking anticoagulant drugs can have nasal bleedings also.
